About Andre Bieler, an artist's life and times:
The updated version of France K. Smith's work introduces French-speaking readers to the little-known work of a committed and complex artist, who sought throughout his life to reconcile tradition and modernity, figuration and abstraction, regionalism and urban culture, in a continual quest for balance and harmony.
Paul Bennett, Le Devoir, Saturday & Sunday 11th and 12th of November, 2006.
The new volume about Canadian artist Andre Bieler (1896-1989) is
a perfect model of an art book. Every important painting is reproduced;
many photos give the context for his long life: the text is supple and well-informed;
and, tucked into the book in CD form, a 53-minute film by the artist's grandson
brings Bieler to life … This fine story of social engagement and creative vigour is well told.
In the course of poring over this book, I felt I got closer to Bieler than almost any artist
I can name.
Robert Amos, Victoria Times Colonist, November 11th, 2006.
Frances K. Smith's statement (on the back cover) that "Bieler is one of Canada's most important artists" may seem peremptory.
Fortunately, the 400 pages of this very beautiful book, Andre Bieler, an artist's Life and Times, prove her point.
