A fine arts graduate of St Martin's School of Art in London (sculpture and film), over the past four decades, Philippe Baylaucq has made a name for himself with his video, interactive, museological and cinematographic work.

Winner of numerous awards in Canada and abroad, his films also demonstrate a clear interest in the transmission of knowledge. For several decades now, he has been exploring the dialogue between cinema and other artistic disciplines: architecture and design (Barcelona, 1985; Twice upon a Garden, 2010), painting (The Hidden Easel, 1997; The Art of Time, 2000), photography (Moving Sands, 2002), dance (Lodela, 1996; Ora, 2011).

An all-rounder, he also directed a musical tale for children (Hugo and the Dragon, 2001), a scientific film (Mind in Motion, 2008) and a moving international documentary about a bereaved father's quest for healing (A Dream for Kabul,, 2008).

In 2007, Philippe Baylaucq was director-coordinator of the collective feature film Happiness Bound, a tribute to Quebec poetry.

His work is marked by constant formal research and a pronounced taste for technological innovation. His works embody narratives that privilege emotion and intimacy.

The Augustines, in their words, 2015, Partners in Design 2016, On Day on Franchère 2017, Ingenia 2017 and Victory, 1918 , all museum projects, including three recent immersive works in collaboration with the NFB, celebrate the contribution of new technologies to transmitting history. Formally, the filmmaker has never ceased to explore the relationship between image and three-dimensional space.

Since 2014, Philippe Baylaucq has signed several 360° immersive works for Espace pour la vie - Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan de Montréal (Tempo, 2014; Aurorae, 2015; Kyma, 2017 ; Worlds of Ice, 2022).

Winner of the Prix Lumières in 2001 for his contribution to the advancement of his profession, he chaired the Association des réalisateurs et réalisatrices du Québec (1996-2000) as well as the Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal (2005-2011) and was vice-president of the Conseil des arts de Montréal from (2011-2018).

About Andre Bieler, an artist's life and times:

The updated version of France K. Smith's work introduces French-speaking readers to the little-known work of a committed and complex artist, who sought throughout his life to reconcile tradition and modernity, figuration and abstraction, regionalism and urban culture, in a continual quest for balance and harmony.
Paul Bennett, Le  Devoir, Saturday & Sunday 11th and 12th of November, 2006.

The new volume about Canadian artist Andre Bieler (1896-1989) is a perfect model of an art book. Every important painting is reproduced; many photos give the context for his long life: the text is supple and well-informed; and, tucked into the book in CD form, a 53-minute film by the artist's grandson brings Bieler to life … This fine story of social engagement and creative vigour is well told. In the course of poring over this book, I felt I got closer to Bieler than almost any artist I can name.

Robert Amos, Victoria Times Colonist, November 11th, 2006.

Frances K. Smith's statement (on the back cover) that "Bieler is one of Canada's most important artists" may seem peremptory.
Fortunately, the 400 pages of this very beautiful book, Andre Bieler, an artist's Life and Times, prove her point.
