A day on Franchère bridge,
2017
Video projections of a bridge model.
During the most recent expansion of the Pointe-à-Callières archeology Museum, the remnants of the old Franchère bridge were rediscovered.
Using the excavation data, and with help from of the archeologists, we created a scaled model of the structure. Using a holographic video projection, 80 extras dressed in period dress are seen crossing from one bank of the Saint-François River to the other, from dawn to dusk. With them we relive a day in the life of the city’s first stone span.

The changing light of the day is enhanced by an animation technique that highlights the profiles and attitudes of an array of early 19th century Montrealers that would have used the bridge around 1824. The interplay of light, textures and reflections brings this magnificent forgotten structure back to life, the ruins of which are still in place beneath Place D’Youville. This intimate immersive presentation unfolds at the confluence of architecture, sculpture and cinema.

A day on Franchère bridge,
2017
Writer Director
Produced by the NFB and created to mark the 375th anniversary of Montreal at the Pointe-à-Callières Museum.
"This partnership is a testament to the exemplary complicity between the teams of scientists, creators and craftspeople at the NFB and Pointe-à-Callière, who have combined their talents to bring the public the experience of a day spent on the Franchère Bridge. This collaboration is part of our desire to innovate in form and reach out to new audiences in public spaces where they wouldn't expect to find us - in this case, in a historic sewer collector. We salute the boldness and vision of Francine Lelièvre, Pointe-à-Callière's Director, and her entire team."
Claude Joli-Coeur, Government Film Commissioner and NFB Chairperson.
