Documentary short
A brilliant puppeteer adapts a Russian fairy tale into a show for young children inspired by the Japanese puppetry tradition of Bunraku.
Traditionally, Bunraku performers, dressed in black and relatively invisible, manipulate their characters in groups. The fact that Judy does it solo, without hiding her face, demonstrates a definite talent for mesmerizing her audience. The challenge was to find a way to celebrate this unusual approach by showing how her characters literally come out of her head. Unlike Japanese puppeteers who hide themselves, Judy Anderson uses all of her facial expressions to emphasize the characters' attitudes and movements, a bold and original technique that children seem to accept without flinching.
