The Last Day, Mons (Victory, 1918_Victoire, 1918),

The very last battle of the Canadian army was the liberation of the historic city of Mons in Belgium.
No visual record exists of this last push which took place the night of November 10-11, 1918. The exhausted soldiers who stretched out in the Grand-Place of Mons on the morning of the 11th could well rejoice. They had successfully driven out the last enemy occupants. Many had paid the price. As men, women and children emerged from their barricaded houses, the combatants were welcomed as heroes, as are Canadian visitors to this day.

The Canadian War Museum asked us to convey this last surge to victory. I travelled to Mons where I photographed extensively. I met generous historians and left with the digital scans of a hundred images from the city's photographic archives.

With young soldiers from the Black Watch, the very same regiment, we then shot scenes in Old Montreal to reenact the fighting. With digital sound and visual post-production, we married the Mons archives and the Montreal fiction sequences to create a visual narrative displayed on three large screens and a smaller diamond shaped projection surface on the floor. Wishing to transport the viewers to the heart of the hostilities, we used spatialized sound and visuals to place them in an architectural rapport to the screen space, the walls of the projection cube meant to mirror the alleys and streets of Mons.
